Italian cities reachable by train: all travel information

You don’t necessarily need to take a car or plane for a trip to the Bel Paese. Find out which major Italian cities can be reached by train.

First of all, you have to decide where to start from. Below you can find information on places you can reach by train from some of Italy’s most important regional capitals, so that you can choose the one closest to you.

Cities that can be reached by train from Milan

We start from the heart of Lombardy. From Milan’s Central Station, you can easily reach:

  • Torino Porta Nuova in about 1 hour;
  • Genoa Piazza Principe in about 1 hour;
  • Venezia Mestre in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes;
  • Bologna Centrale in about 1 hour.

One clarification: for these routes, as well as for all the other indications that follow, it is assumed that you take the fastest train available, i.e. the high-speed. Other solutions will take longer.
In addition, for both these and subsequent indications, we will only recommend those cities that can be reached directly by a single train, without making any changes. This certainly makes the journey more pleasant.

Cities reachable by train from Florence

We move a little further down, passing from northern to central Italy. To be precise, we are in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. From the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station, without any changes, you can reach:

  • Bologna Centrale in approximately 1 hour;
  • Pisa Centrale in approximately 1 hour;
  • Livorno Centrale in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes;
  • Roma Termini in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Florence is located on the high-speed line connecting Milan to Naples. Therefore, from the Tuscan capital you can also reach Milan in about 2 hours and Naples in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Cities reachable by train from Rome

A famous old saying goes: ‘all roads lead to Rome’. This remains true today, especially when it comes to the railways: the capital is, in fact, very well connected by train. In particular, the cities that can be reached in a short time from Roma Termini station are:

  • Florence in about 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Naples in about 1 hour;
  • L’Aquila in about 3 hours (the only exception to the other cities, this time you will have to make a change, in Terni to be precise).

The same applies to Rome as to Florence: since it is on the Milan-Naples high-speed line, it takes just over 2 hours to Bologna and just over 3 hours to Milan.

Cities reachable by train from Naples

From Naples Centrale station, located in Piazza Garibaldi, you can get to:

  • Rome in 1 hour;
  • Salerno in approximately 1 hour;
  • Caserta in about 1 hour.

Not forgetting, of course, that Naples is also on the Milan-Naples high-speed line.

Travelling by train in Italy

From and to the cities we have suggested, travelling by train in Italy is absolutely simple: you only have to take one train and, in no time, you will have arrived at your destination. There are always plenty of journeys on these routes throughout the year and throughout the day. The departure and arrival stations are located in central areas of the respective cities.
